Dating sites such as American company eHarmony has managed to attract a whopping one million users in the UK since its launch in June 2009. So what makes this site different from other free online dating sites in attracting those looking for love?

Most sites leave users to their own devices allowing them to contact whoever they are initially attracted to on the site. This may be based on looks or on similar interests for instance. However eHarmony goes that one step further by matching people up based on psychological research.

The site is so dedicated to trying to match up perfect couples for successful long term relationships that the company even has a so-called LA based love laboratory. Here, scientists and relationship experts all try to find the defining features that make the perfect relationship.

Upon joining the site, users need to fill out a questionnaire and answer questions such as what qualities they want a potential partner to have.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Morwenna White from Bristol revealed she had tried a number of sites in the past but had never been successful in finding a long term relationship until she met her current fiancé on eHarmony.

She told the paper: "When filling out the questionnaire you're encouraged to list all the things you want in a partner- I put down intelligence, kindness, stability and someone who wanted marriage and children."

Her fiancé Martin also admits he signed up to the site due to the scientific approach on matching up couples.
